Demolition of a chemical facility in Cyprus

Van Vliet Demolition executed the contract for the decontamination and demolition of the former hellenic chemical industries complex at cyprus.

Van Vliet Demolition has finisheded the decommissioning, decontamination and demolition of the former HCI plant at Cyprus. The entire site (measuring 22 hectares) has been cleared in order to make space for the construction of the new Energy Center (LNG Terminal). The client was the Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Tourism of Cyprus. The entire works has taken seven months.

The plant was idled in 1995, and was just turned off and has never been cleaned. The entire facility needs being cleaned from large quantities of chemical waste and residues, NORM or readio-active materials and asbestos. After the decontamination, Van Vliet will demolish all three process plants:

  • Phosphoric Acid plant
  • Sulphuric Acid Plant
  • NPK Processing and Packaging Plant

Included in the project is the demolition of three spheres (25m diameter), weighing a total of 1000 tonnes, the demolition of a flare (110m high), Boilers, Furnace, Reactorsection, Condesation section, a Washing section, a tankfarm, pipebridges, buildings, structures etc. etc.
